Prose, Poetry, and Random Ramblings

Benazir

She was too young when she started experiencing one
house arrest after another before she being imprisoned
under solitary confinement in a wall-less cage for six
months. The conditions were so bad that she had to be
hospitalized for months and then she was in Karachi
Central Jail again for months. She lost her father when
a military dictator hanged him.

When she went abroad she could have easily settled over
there and never came back to the dangerous and dirty
dungeon of Pakistani politics. No one would have mocked
her or ridiculed her; infact all would only have
commended her for staying awaying from the same
treachery and trauma of Pakistani Politics which had
killed her own father. Perhaps since she was ‘only a
woman who had no right and/or no chance of making it in
the murky world of Pakistani politics.

But she was Bhutto’s daughter and she must have made
her dad proud when she returned back and started
campaigning for none other than the top slot of
Pakistani politics. Being a woman who was up against
the establishment it was no mean feat to have reached
that top slot not once but twice.

It was hence a sad day when, in order to become a Prime
Minister the third time over, she made an alliance with
the same establishment which is considered responsible
for her dad’s murder by most analysts.

What happened after that is an unsolved riddle wrapped
in many dark mysteries but what counts is that despite
knowing her life was in danger, despite seemingly been
told by Musharraf (as a form of hidden threat) that he
was not responsible for her security, despite the
threats of fanatic barbaric Talebans who could not
tolerate a woman ruling them she kept on campaigning,
travelling, protesting and fighting.

Moments before she was murdered, she was smiling,
waving her hand to the cheering crowds and she seemed
happy. And then she was no more.

And most, if not all, and I was one of them, were sad
that day and are sad today. This is despite the fact
that we don’t subscribe to your political ideology and
don’t appreciate quite a few actions of yours (what a
pity to have nominated your son as the next chairperson
as if this was a personal fiefdom) but we appreciate
your bravery, your courage and your steadfastness, and
we vociferously condemn your murder.

Let’s just hope that your son does what your husband can’t or won’t,i.e., punishing your murderers so that justice prevails and so that the common man starts to hope that since a leader got justice, perhaps he might get some someday soon.

Take care and rest in peace.
