Pathar, Pathan and a Poem

I received a beautiful poem via sms from one of my best friends. I have no idea who wrote the poem or what the name of the poem is, but let’s enjoy the poem.

“Pathar tha magar barf k golon ki tarha tha
Ek shaks andheron mein ujalon ki tarha tha

Khwabon ki tarha tha na khayalon ki tarha tha
Wo ilm-e-riazi kay sawalon ki tarha tha

Uljha huwa aisa kay kabhi hal ho na paya
Suljha huwa aisa kay misalon ki tarha tha

Wo mil to gaya tha magar apna hi muqaddar
Shatranj ki uljhi hui chalon ki tarha tha

Wo rooh may khushboo ki tarha ho gaya tahleel
Jo door bohat chand kay halon ki tarha tha”

The first time I read the sms’ed poem, I thought the first word was not ‘Pathar’ , but ‘Pathan’.

Imagine that!

Being a Pathan myself, I think the mistake suited me well and probably it made me like the poem even more. But the poem is really good even if the first word WAS really ‘Pathan’ .and even if one is a non-Pathan. There is, according to many people, not much difference between a ‘Pathan’ and a Pathar anyway.

It would be safe to assume, (at least for those who do not know Pathan, or those who know Pathans too well) that a Pathan is just a ‘Pathar-with-the-chemical-properties-of-a-baraf-ka-gola’.

And now I feel very inspired and I just want to write a funny Pathan poem on the same lines.

Or… why a funny one? There are too many ‘art’ created making fun of Pathans anyway.

What if I write a decent, serious, even political poem keeping in mind the number of innocent civilian Pathans being killed by US forces, NATO forces and our own Pakistani forces?

We will see. I will try my best.May be I will try writing something in the tube when I go to meet a client tomorrow evening. But I will just try writing a couple of lines before I publish this post anyway:

Pathan tha kay train kay daboon ki tarha tha
Aasman may tairtay huway bheegay badlon ki tarha tha

Now… by writing such stuff I think I am offending myself and all Pathans. I will try something better soon. Ciao
